Centenarian Padma Shri
Pappammal, who is 105 years old, has been bestowed with Padma Shri award on the occasion of 72nd Republic Day. The award is the fourth highest civilian award in India.
Pappammal is a noted agriculturist in the country. She runs her own organic farming and despite her advance age, still goes to her 2.5 acres field to do farming. She has also been hailed as a great crusader of organic farming.
Age is only a number
While the ordinary men aspire to retire at 60, Pappammal is still active even at the age of 105. She was born in 1914 in Devalapuram village of Tamil Nadu.
According to a Times of India report, the centenarian continues to labour at her field in Thekkampatti, a village on the banks of river Bhavani. She continues to cultivate millets, pulses and vegetables.
Political and social life
She had been also active politically and socially in her early days. She is known to attend debates organized by the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University and was a councillor of Thekkampatti panchayat in 1959.
